What questions does the ESTA form ask?

The ESTA form is completed online. It comprises three distinct sections of information to be completed to validate the online application for ESTA travel authorization.

These three main headings are in order:

• The traveler’s personal identity information;
• Travel information for the United States ;
• Questions concerning the traveler’s state of health, intentions and criminal record.

Personal information of the traveler

In this first part of the questionnaire, candidates are asked to fill in all their personal identity details. The main data to be entered are: first and last names, date and town of birth, gender, marital status, email address, parents’ identity, contact details of last employer.

Since December 2022, it has been necessary to download your passport for the USA online to validate the information entered in the first part of the form.

Travel information for the United States

The second part of the form on the official ESTA website allows you to enter your travel details for the U.S. territory. The traveler must provide information concerning the airline, the city of embarkation for the trip and the place of residence in the USA during the stay.

Finally, it is necessary to indicate the contact details of the person to be contacted in an emergency, whether in the United States or abroad.

Questions about health and criminal record

The last part of the questionnaire consists of 10 qualifying questions. These questions enable the U.S. authorities to determine the traveler’s eligibility to enter the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program. The questions are closed-ended, and can only be answered with YES or NO. Here are the themes of the questions:

• The traveler’s personal health
• His criminal record
• His drug history
• Potential terrorist activities
• Applicant’s career aspirations in the United States
• History of visa applications in the USA
• His previous trips to Africa and the Middle East.

The last box allows the traveler to certify that he or she has read and understood the completed ESTA form. The traveler waives the right to contest any decision made by the immigration officer at customs upon arrival in the United States.

What documents do I need to answer ESTA questions?

To complete the questions on the online ESTA form, the traveler must have the following travel documents for the United States:

• A credit card to pay for the ESTA.
